CO2CRC: Otway Stage 4 — CRC-8

The Client

CO2CRC is Australia’s leading carbon capture, utilisation and storage research organisation with over 20 years of experience safely capturing, storing and monitoring CO2. CO2CRC’s research portfolio extends to clean hydrogen and other low emission technologies such as Direct Air Capture and Carbon Negative Biorefineries. In collaboration with internationally respected industry, academic and government partners CO2CRC delivers low emission technology solutions to the world.

The Project

CRC-8 was drilled as part of the Otway Stage 4 Project in CO2CRC’s established research facility – the Otway International Test Centre (OITC). The Stage 4 Project seeks to utilize the Otway wells to inject and then monitor CO2 in the subsurface with innovative monitoring and validation techniques that have been specifically chosen to be trialled at the field implementation level.

Our Services

CRC-8 was directionally drilled with SLR-166 from an existing well pad, targeting the Paaratte PS-2 saline aquifer, to a depth of 1680 mMDRT. The well included conventional coring and the production casing was run and cemented successfully with two fibre optic cables installed. The well was designed and installed under CO2 corrosive environment criteria, including Chrome production casing, and a corrosion resistant cement blend.

Outcomes

Managing every aspect of the well construction project management, inGauge Energy delivered efficiency and precision from the design stage and the procurement of equipment and services through to the final execution phase. Our exemplary safety record was maintained, with the program being completed without incident or accident.
