From the North Sea to the NT – meet Jeremy Hill

With a career that’s spanned the North Sea, West Africa, the Caribbean and now regional Australia, our Project Manager, Jeremy Hill, brings global expertise and grounded pragmatism to every project he leads.

Originally from Surrey in the UK, Jeremy’s career in oil and gas has taken him across the world, working for majors like Shell, Arco, and BP before making the move to Australia three years ago.

“Engineering has always been about delivery for me. Working in teams to assess and solve problems, getting things done and then seeing the results of your work.”

You’ve worked all over the world – where did your career start?

I studied Chemical Engineering at university in Nottingham. After that, I started my career in the oil industry with Shell in the Netherlands.  Shell invested heavily in training, which was fantastic – you progressed quickly from working on rigs to running operations within a year or two.

I started on the tools, roughnecking and roustabouting on land rigs. That early hands-on experience shaped the way I approach engineering today and gave me a good understanding of the challenges and effective teamwork needed to safely drill wells.

What kinds of roles did you pursue and where after that?

I started my career working on onshore fields in The Netherlands and then held a variety of engineering and project leadership roles for offshore campaigns in the North Sea, Angola, Norway, Trinidad, Azerbaijan and now Australia. More recently, I have worked on two Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects in the UK and Australia.

Interesting fact – inGauge has more experience in onshore Carbon Capture and Storage drilling than any other operator in Australia.

What has been the most memorable place you’ve worked and why?

Probably Trinidad. My family and I spent three years there when the kids were young (they’re now 18, 20 and 22). It was a great time of life, warm weather, good people, and a strong community feel. But I’ve enjoyed every location in different ways – Holland, Norway, Angola – and now Australia all have their own unique culture and rewards.

Onshore or offshore?

Looking back, working offshore in the North Sea was all quite exciting, going out in helicopters in rough weather and working on huge offshore rigs.  I prefer onshore now. Offshore projects are much bigger, more hierarchical, and slower to change. I prefer working with smaller teams — there’s more satisfaction in getting things done quickly and problem-solving.

What are the biggest challenges you face in onshore projects in Australia?

Onshore work allows you to have far more influence on the outcome. You’re working in smaller teams, solving problems in real time, and you feel that sense of achievement when things come together.  That’s particularly true in regional Australia, where remoteness, environmental sensitivity and safety present a raft of unique challenges.

Tell me more about your technical area of expertise?

Technically, my expertise is in well engineering, particularly well design and project delivery. I have experience in well integrity management, plug and abandonment (P&A), risk assessments, turnkey project delivery, expert witness services, and in the creation and implementation of HSE management systems.

And your role at inGauge?

At inGauge, my title is Senior Project Manager. I’ve had a variety of roles, from doing the drilling engineering and operational support through to providing project management oversight and technical guidance. I’ve also worked on two stimulation campaigns in the Taroom Trough and Beetaloo Basin, which is a major change from the early part of my career, where all the wells flowed naturally!

Finally, what do you enjoy most about working at inGauge?

I like the people, the culture, and the broad experience base within the company. It’s an environment where you can get involved in a lot of different things and apply your experience in new ways. We’re all about practical engineering, working alongside good people, and delivering for our clients.
